EVAW wants to acknowledge the devastating recent violence and escalations in Palestine and Israel, which we know are impacting many of our members, both directly and indirectly. Our heartfelt thoughts are with you all – our colleagues, your staff teams, volunteers and those you support.
We know that many of you may have loved ones who have been killed, are currently under siege, have been taken hostage, are missing, or are living under occupation. We want to acknowledge the pain, anxiety and trauma that is impacting Palestinian, Israeli and other individuals and communities in the areas where the conflict is unfolding, and in the diasporas who are grieving the loss of beloved friends and family members, and dealing with ongoing uncertainty and horror.
It is well known in our sector that violence against women and children is used as a weapon in times of war and conflict, exposing them and other vulnerable groups to sexual violence, exploitation, isolation and harassment. This, in addition to the scale of deaths and devastating effects of war, layering trauma upon trauma for survivors.
We are conscious of how these tragic events also impact communities in the UK, and we are really concerned about the increase in antisemitic and Islamophobic attacks here, and the particular way this is affecting the ability of victims and survivors of abuse to access safety and support.
In solidarity, we add our voice to the call for an immediate ceasefire and urgent humanitarian action. Both are necessary first steps to prevent further deaths and violence.
