We welcome measures announced in the Queen’s speech today introducing legislation to ‘protect the victims of domestic violence and abuse’. Violence against women and girls affects all of us and we look forward to working with MPs to ensure these important new laws are robust and effective.
During the election campaign, Theresa May wrote to our Coalition setting out plans for this legislation, including introducing a new commissioner to make sure government policies and interventions are working. She also promised to review the funding of refuges and ensure the introduction of compulsory Relationships and Sex Education in UK schools. We hope all of these measures receive the necessary time and attention to ensure they happen soon.
